Negredo eyes Spain first team

Spain striker Alvaro Negredo is ready to battle for a starting berth in Vincent Del Bosque s first 11 after scoring against South Korea.

Negredo was a surprise inclusion in Spain s final 23-man squad for Euro 2012 and bagged the final goal in a 4-1 friendly win over South Korea after coming on as a second-half substitute on Wednesday.

The 26-year-old Sevilla striker scored 14 goals in La Liga last season and is set to challenge Fernando Torres and Llorente for the striker s role after edging Robert Soldado for a place in the squad.

Winning the race for the number nine is going to be challenging, Negredo said.

Every player in the squad is important and anyone can play.

We will wait for the manager s decision and I m facing this challenge with a lot of eagerness, as the rest of my teammates do.

Holders Spain begin their title defence on June 10 against Group C opponents Italy, before matches against the Republic of Ireland and Croatia.

Negredo, who scored five times in his first six internationals, believes Spain have the quality to win successive European crowns but singled out 2008 finalists Germany as their biggest threat.

You can expect the best from the Spanish team, he said.

“There s so much quality in the team that any of my teammates could do something special.

But Germany could be one of the favourites.

Despite their last result, the Germans have been playing very well recently. I think they will be in the mix to reach the final and win.
